PLEASE: My privacy has already been invaded by the media across the entire state of Iowa. Misdemeanor charges do not warrant this type of media coverage. I do not wish to be the "poster child" for any movements. I am just responding the only way I can to try and get some good out of all of this.
The problem and this website is not about any police department nor any Court or prosecutor. The solution sits in the laps of our lawmakers...you know, the politicians we elect.
The lawmakers need to make compassionate changes NOW! How much more time needs to pass by while they ignore the overwhelming evidence that more good than bad will come of this?
There is a place in our country for the use of medical marijuana under the supervision of a doctor and supplied away from the black market by a licensed pharmacy or medical supplier. This will make it easier to control its use by minors, just like the "We Card" campaign has lowered the number of minors who use tobacco.
I've been charged with two misdemeanors...both possession. I will say nothing further as this is currently in the court. Nothing I have said here states as evidence that I admit to anything the law may have alleged against me. I am just telling you about me and an opinion I have & happen to share with millions of people.
We Need To Be Heard. Our Government works for us. Let's NOT have a year like we had last year where more people in this country were arrested for marijuana possession than all violent crimes combined. Let us allow the police to use their resources on the stronger drugs and other illegal activities. People shouldn't have to become criminals in order to better take care of themselves. But they're forced to by laws created out of fallacy and held on to by ignorance.
Please remember - I'm not lucky that I have Crohn's Disease so I can claim medical need for marijuana. This is not a legal defense in Iowa. Think about it. That doesn't make any sense at all. I wish to God I was healthy.
Stop arresting sick people. Stop forcing sick people into the black market. This is about sick people living in fear just because they use a medicine that the Federal government's own study showed is NOT addictive and NOT a gateway drug. Make no mistake about it - this issue is no more about marijuana than the recent tea parties were about tea. This is about sick and dying people. This is about compassion.
Please note: I do NOT encourage anyone to break any law, statute or ordinance in order to use marijuana. That is a personal choice no one can make but you. Be aware of any risks you will take and hazards you may face if you choose to break any laws. Don't wait like I did and get in trouble with the law before you speak out. Updates to my case will be shown on the home page.
Thank you for spending time with me today.
